Is being a freelancer really so easy?

I have lost count of the number of times I have heard someone say: You are a freelancer, that must be so great, to have all that free time!

Well, turns out that freelancing isn’t as easy as it appears to be. Actually, it’s pretty darn hard work. You see, as a freelancer, I am responsible for finding clients and persuading them that I can offer them something that the next guy can’t. My income is not secure and it can fluctuate wildly from month to month, there are no paid leave days, or sick days, or family responsibility days. There are, however, deadlines, revisions, corrections and administrative tasks that can’t and won’t wait for anyone.

Don’t get me wrong- I love my job, it does give me a lot of freedom and flexibility to manage my schedule as I see fit but with great freedom comes great responsibility. If you can crack the ever-illusive balance between free time and work time, you should be able to make it as a freelancer.
